What is Trekking?
Trekking is an outdoor recreational activity of hiking or walking for more than a day. It can be a short or an extended journey, and may or may not involve camping outdoors. In Nepal, trekking is the most widespread activity for tourists, obviously due to its privilege of being home to the Himalayas. There are many different ways to do a trek and the trekking culture often varies from country to country.
Trekking usually consists of a series of ascents and descents walking 5 to 7 hours (9 to 14 km) per day on average with a guide, cook, and porters and on some occasions, pack animals. The objective of trekking is not just a particular destination, but the journey itself. You travel at a modest pace, observing nature, rural communities, and spectacular mountain panoramas. Trekking is the best way to experience Nepal’s beauty either on beaten trails or off the beaten path, which is known as virgin tracks. Nepal is a trekker’s paradise. The organic rhythm of foot travel is a wonderful way to explore and make meaningful contact with the country and its friendly people. A trekking route will often pass through forests of rhododendron, bamboo, oak, and hemlock, visiting one or two villages each day.
Mountain Travel Nepal offers two kinds of treks, namely tented treks and lodge based treks. Tented treks include the provision of all meals and a Sherpa team consisting of a Sardar (Trek Manager), a cook, support Sherpas, and locally employed porters to carry all heavy gear including the sleeping, dining, kitchen and toilet tents, folding chairs, food supplies, kitchen equipment, and client duffel bags. Lodge-based Treks include the provision of all meals, a guide, and porters to carry client duffel bags. For both types, you are only required to carry a light day pack containing your immediate needs for the day. With our history, heritage, and love for the Himalayas, we encourage tented treks, which allow you to get away from the main trails and off the beaten track to experience authentically what Nepal has to offer.
